Settle

To become habituated in a given environment or state of affairs is to survive in that environment. This takes time and energy, accumulating knowledge of the environment and changing one's practices, skills, and habits to persist in that environment.

But modernity is in constant movement. It hasn't the time or energy to adapt, and so to persist it flips this relationship around: it produces a homogenized, abstracted system of habitation, which it spreads in all directions so as to situate itself wherever it moves.
